Sweat, sweat and more sweat. The Boileroom definitely lives up to its name. Especially when The Magic Gang take the stage and blow the fucking roof off, I’ve been to alot of gigs at The Boileroom, but this one felt different. The sense of anticipation before they came on was palpable, everyone in that room knew they were about to see something special from the band who im sure are destined to be festival headliners in the future. They started off the set with Getting Along, a real crowd pleaser. This got the crowd bouncing right from the start, they went from hit to hit, playing all of their most memorable songs from the Album and the 3 EPs. I’ve seen The Magic Gang 6 times at various gigs and festivals, and without a doubt, this is the best time I’ve seen them.
One very special thing about this gig was the fact that they debuted 3 new songs during the set. ‘Just a Minute’, ‘What Have You Got To Lose’ and ‘Gonna Bounce Back’. Giving the crowd a taste of the upcoming album really pumped up the atmosphere even more. All three of the tracks were brilliant. ‘Gonna Bounce Back’ being my personal favourite, reminding me of Twist and Shout by The Beatles. If these three tracks are a sense of what is to come from the next album, then it is definitely one to be excited for. Spacing these new songs throughout their set meant that it was incredibly well paced, mixing fan favourites with unheard tracks.
This show was their warm up before they played the BBC Sounds Stage at Latitude Festival on Saturday. Having seen them at festivals before, I think they are a perfect festival band, listening to their light, cheerful sounding indie rock on a summer’s afternoon with a cold pint in hand is definitely an experience not to be missed.
