Years & Years sanctified; a BDSM bop to watch.

Released almost 2 weeks ago, Years and Years new single ‘Sanctify’ taken from their upcoming second album, mixes a simplistic beat with vocal flows previously unheard by the group.

Singer Olly Alexander’s vocal flows can be experimental enough whilst still allowing his powerful voice to shine throughout the chorus. Holding back on production, his voice helps create a contrast to the higher tones of the backing music, showing a strong relationship between the production and emotion portrayed through the song.

Whilst ‘Sanctify’ itself is predominantly a pop song with BDSM references, it is littered with early Christina Aguilera and Britney influences used to focus on the LGBT+ community. Relationships from the singers past with straight males allowed the group to explore struggles of acceptance for its members and others whilst still creating an anthem worthy of topping the charts.

With Troye Sivan and Hayley Kiyoko leading the way with LGBT empowerment, Years and Years use their platform to empower their audience and discuss darker sides to the relationships. If the new single is anything to go by, then their upcoming second album should be full of dark pop anthems intended to normalise BDSM.
