5 Tracks we’d take to a desert island: Alex Thomson

Teenage Kicks – The Undertones

This is one of the songs that shaped my entire music taste. I remember my dad putting this onto one of the mix CDs he made me when I was about 8 and it’s been one of my favourite songs ever since. Its infectiously catchy and is the perfect rock song.

Burnout – Green Day

This song and the entire album perfectly encapsulates how I felt a few years ago, burnt out, tired and a little bit hopeless. That is before I started actually focusing on what I wanted to do. Now I use this song as a reminder of how far I’ve come, I have ambitions and I’m motivated to achieve them, something 16-year-old me definitely couldn’t have claimed.

Toothpaste Kisses – The Maccabees

This song has become very special to me over the past few years, it helps me to relax when I’m feeling anxious and reminds me that I am loved. It helps pick me up when I’m down and makes 100 miles away feel much closer than it is.

The Ballad of Me and My Friends – Frank Turner

This song is the ultimate call to arms for any creative. It tells you to get your ass in gear and work, even if you don’t succeed at least you can say you tried. “If you are all about the destination then take a fucking flight”.

Space Oddity – David Bowie

As a fan of astronomy, listening to this song is the closest thing I can get to being in space. Its atmospheric and immersive and it tells the story of Major Tom beautifully. I love this song so much that I have a tattoo dedicated to it on my arm.
