Whether you’re a fan of dance, pop or indie music, Benin City has something for you.
London based trio Benin City have just dropped their brand new single ‘Freaking You Out’ following on from their 2018 album ‘Last Night’, and their 2020 standalone singles ‘Mess Like Me’ and ‘Get Your Own’.
The trio, consisting of Joshua Idehen, Tom Leaper and Shanaz Dorsett take musical inspiration from the likes of Kelis, Christine and the Queens and Sylvan Esso. Benin City has that perfect balance of creating funky club tracks that can also be appreciated from the comfort of your own home, something we’ve all had to get used to.
Having spent the entire year glued to the news, this track reflects on the overwhelming amount of political and cultural issues that we have all been faced with over the last year, with Joshua Idehen saying: “I wrote it as a soundtrack to Doomscrolling – a ‘Doomscrolling disco’ if you will. Staring at Twitter, constantly refreshing the screen for the next bit of bad news to blanket over me.”
The trios singer Shanaz Dorsett adds that: “It’s a perfect collision between the type of sounds that we once boogied to together and the anxious sentiments that we all share at the moment.”
Starting the year on a high note, ‘Freaking You Out’ is the dreamy dance-pop tune we all need right now, so put down your phone, turn off the TV, and get lost in the ‘London nightlife’ inspired music that Benin City is treating us to.
