Meet shining SAPPHIRE, the 17-year-old singer-songwriter and reigning YouTube star.

Using social platforms as an output for showcasing her vocal talent over the last decade, SAPPHIRE has gained a colossal 100 million views through covering the latest chart earworms alongside the classics.

More recently, SAPPHIRE is getting into the festive spirit by releasing her 4-track ‘Driving Home For Christmas’ EP via Sony Music.

Ahead of a new year filled with original material from the singer, we had a little chat with SAPPHIRE:

You’ve made a name for yourself through your magnificent renditions of songs via YouTube – where did your musical background originate from?

Aw, thank you! I’ve been singing since I was 3 years old, and my family all adore music. I always used to just sing around the house 24/7 (still do, haha!), and so my mum suggested posting a video of me singing on YouTube when I was 7. I love making music, it makes me so happy, and I honestly couldn’t live without it.

You’re kind of an OG when it comes to YouTube, having uploaded covers for the past decade – what’s the best part about covering the music you love?

Making covers definitely helped me find my own sound. I’ve learnt so much over the past decade and have been able to use what I’ve learnt in my own records. I’m so very grateful for that.

2020 has certainly been a busy year for SAPPHIRE, covering the likes of Dua Lipa to The Weeknd – how do you go about deciding which artists to cover?

I would usually pick the biggest songs in the charts! But as I started to find myself as an artist, I began covering classic songs (like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, etc) that inspired me when I was younger, as well as the big hits of today. I’m also always reading the song suggestions that my fans send in as well, they always have the best ideas, teehee.

The new ‘Driving Home For Christmas’ EP sees you covering four seasonal classics – out of all the festive numbers that’ve been made, why these four songs?

These songs all hold a very special place in my heart. For example, ‘Driving Home For Christmas’ is a song that I’d always hear on the radio whilst my family drove up to Scotland to see our close friends. It brings back so so many amazing memories. I also really wanted to pick songs with positive lyrics, so I hope my reimagined versions of these classics can give people a sense of happiness, and hope…

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year (or so they say) – what gets you into the Christmas spirit?

Oh, I definitely agree that it’s the most wonderful time of the year haha! I adore Christmas, it’s just such a happy time. Christmas music is definitely the first thing I do once November hits, and putting up the Christmas tree with my family is so much fun.

What will SAPPHIRE bring to the table in 2021, and are there any plans for original material in the new year?

Definitely! Having spent a lot of time indoors this year, I’ve really been able to find who I am as an artist (and in general as a person too), so discovering my sound has been great fun. I’ve written so much music over the past 12 months, and I’m so excited for everyone to hear it all. Just taking every day as it comes, and enjoying every single second!
