Having not released anything since her incredible second album ‘Soft Sounds From Another Planet’ in 2017, Michelle Zauner also known as Japanese Breakfast has returned with the sparkling, 80’s influenced single ‘Be Sweet’.
‘Be Sweet’ is the first track to be released off of Zauner’s upcoming album ‘Jubilee’, which is set to come out on June 4th via Dead Oceans. Co-written with Jack Tatum of Wild Nothing, the song features a catchy guitar melody that instantly separates itself from any of Zauner’s previous work.
The dramatic change in sound from shoegaze-influenced indie-pop to flamboyant 80’s indie-pop comes after Zauner had spent her last two albums wallowing in the sadness that arrived with her mother’s diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and remained when she passed away. When speaking about the new direction she wanted to go in with this album, Zauner said “After spending the last five years writing about grief, I wanted our follow-up to be about joy. For me, a third record should feel bombastic and so I wanted to pull out all the stops for this one” and, this single makes it clear that pulling out all the stops is what she has done.
This track is filled with bright harmonies and boasts colours both figuratively and literally, the album cover features her dressed in baby yellow surrounded by gold-tinged persimmons designed to look like party ornaments. The music video for ‘Be Sweet’ fits perfectly with this new sound. An ode to the X Files, it stars Missy from Mannequin Pussy acting as Zauner’s partner in crime and is a fun addition to ‘Be Sweet’ as a song.
