National Service – ‘Last January’

The militantly named band offers a hauntingly sombre take on The Twilight Sad’s ‘Last January’

National Service are a four-piece band consisting of Fintan Campbell (vocals/guitar), Daniel Hipkin (bass/vocals), Iain Kelly (guitar/vocals), and Matthew Alston (drums). The militantly named band offers a hauntingly sombre take on The Twilight Sad’s ‘Last January’.

Fintan originally showcased a solo performance of this classic The Twilight Sad tune during the initial lockdown period. After gaining the initial nod from James Graham, the lead from The Twilight Sad, Iain Kelly set about fashioning a reimagined version of the song, piecing together various offcuts of studio recordings, rehearsal noises, and ambient sounds from deserted London streets. The other members contributed new remotely recorded parts to create a heavily-orchestrated, ambient take on the original. This cover portrays exactly why comparisons to Frightened Rabbit, Mogwai, and The Twilight Sad themselves, are made – with all portraying murky, moody undertones.

The original by the Scottish band already offers a dark, atmospheric setting, however, National Service’s take manages to take this even darker gothic take. ‘Last January’ provides a perfect soundtrack to an eremitical and troubled past year.
