Leeds based alternative rock quintet VENUS GRRRLS have returned with their latest single ‘Goth Girl’ following the release of their debut EP ‘Wicked Things’ in April 2020, and it’s obvious to see where their influences are drawn from. In the very Bikini Kill esque tune, electronic and astrological sounds take over – hence the band’s name, also giving them the ability to amplify their sonic signature.
Having taken inspiration from the Riot Grrrl movement of the 1990s, the band set out on a mission to defeat age-old interpretations and microaggressions against women in rock. Lead singer GK says “It’s no surprise to those that know us that it was ‘Rebel Girl’ by Bikini Kill that glued all of VENUS GRRRLS together when we first met“, which has to be one of the most famous songs to come out of the Riot Grrrl movement. “My favourite thing about that song was the utmost appreciation it had for women, the idea of empowering each other and holding each other up high” she explains. “I was thinking about this when writing the lyrics to Goth Girl, I wanted there to be this figure in it that I could bond with.”
The band are certainly are able to bring fortitude and activism through hard-hitting alt-rock music, much like their hero Kathleen Hanna. Building confidence in this modern era to all people who feel as though they can relate to the message behind VENUS GRRRLS.
